Hi again Richie, I finished with the army end of '79 - married a few times - had 2 sons (3 grandchildren) ran a pub in Devon for about six years and another in the Brecon Beacons untill 2001(foot & mouth outbreak) got out at the right time and went back on the road driving artic's untill forced to retire a couple of years ago due to industrial injury.

I see by the comment below that Tony Rountree & Eric Elgie(Hi) are still drinking(nice) I wonder if Tony remembers taking out 30 mts of fence with a 4 tonner while soaked in beer between Hamlyn and Os,and if Eric remembers throwing "tracks" off his Chevvy half track, as for Jock Bruce's question - who did the same with a plastic replica outside the ssm's office door in Osnabruck?

[Hi Taff It seems such a long time ago when we were in Ripon - then again it was 40 years ago - how are you - I have been married now for 35 years 3 kids 2 boys 1 girl  -  11 Grand Children - makes it expensive at Xmas  - still working hard - run an industrial Roofing company - bit slow at pres. What you up to.

Hi Ric hie,

It's been a long time, and sorry to hear that Paddy has passed away - had some good times in his company as you'll remember. I left 7 in May '69 for 11sqn in Malacca and not heard much about 7 untill I recently found this web site.

Keep in touch - Best regards Taff (Williams)

Another name for the nominal roll. Lcpl Des Goodwin was MT in '65, around Dennis Gander's time. I believe he got busted in '66 and was then posted.

Hank,

Des was 16 Sqn in Osnabruck Ginge O'Reilly and I were good friends with both him and his wife Val.

Met his son who was serving with the Guards in Girdwood Bks Belfast while I was the RUCLO he transferred to the Corp shortly after that.

Sadly Val died a couple of years ago,Des still lives in Norfolk.

Well they have finally called the Army in to build them a bridge in Cumbria. That brings back memories. Within 24hrs the Recce Sgt would have been on site wearing his wellies, white sea boot socks and leather jerkin, clutching a 6ft rod, 50ft tape metalic woven and a mill board. Using the latest high tech equipment he would check the ground bearing pressure of the base plate area...stamp in the heel, if he just made a mark it was 3tons PSI, if the foot sank up to the ankle.. 1ton PSI.   Find ing the size of the gap was a bit more technical. He needed two trees, one on each bank, then using a bit of trigonometry he could calculate the amount of  bridging required... then he added 50% "to be on the safe side" Elf and Safety was paramount, white tape around everything, and everyone on the site had to wear a life jacket... at least they kept you warm.

For the next 24hrs the site would ring with the cries of "hands on lift up" "hit the b...y thing" "pin in", "hands on the bridge" Spikes out, Heave" "Jacks in, down, up,up," "if you drop that spanner you go in after it"      Those were the days.

Hi Bernie

I cant see what took them so long ,what a showpiece for the corps . The military guy said it would take a week .I am sure if they got us together with our dodgy knees and wooden bladders it wouldnt take that long .big grin

I left 7 in 66 so never went to Ripon. Apart from the reunion this year that is.

Fred left 7 for 11 in about 63 and I've no idea what troop he went to. He was ex 9 and they were forming 11 as another 9 at the time but I don't think it ever happened. He was a right character so you would have remembered him.  I've never heard of him since. I went to Singapore after 7. First to 51 then 54 because 51 were redeployed to Waterbeach and I had only done 1 year of the tour so I finished it off at 54. Went to Crown in its latter stages. In fact I was there for the hand over and came out from 54. It'll be good to meet you at reunion 2010

Hi Dave...Looked at the notice board and the photo's, looks like a lot of us have swopped the six pack for a cask!

got the brain's rattling a bit trying to remember back to the 60's, Maj Crawford was OC (no chocolate coat on that one) can't remember the ssm was it Billy Radborn?

2 troop i think was led by Lt. Day(later capt), Phil Langley (S/sgt) Jock Donald (Sgt) Brummie & Mick Hammill(Cpl) then the lads:- Mick field. Harry Aspinal, Alan Morton, Mick Hammond, Del Roberts and so on, the only one i can remember since leaving Ripon was Richie Baker who followed me out  to 11sqn Malacca.

Regarding my departure from Ripon(where i only lasted 1 year) well that was down to a member of claro wives club(who ended up in another club) sorry can't divulge any more than that, anyhow it was Major Alford's office one day, four weeks leave the next, then a plane ticket to Singapore.

Will keep in touch, best regards to all and I'm sure Dave R will read this.

Ps. lost the link to the profile page (PC novice) can I get it resent?

All the best Col (taff, Taffy or Ginge)

For fear of being classed as racist, I decline to comment about the drum messages, I should have been using smaller drums apparently.!!!!

I recognise a lot of names on your roll, and note a lot are missing. Certainly remember Bob Blakey, Dave Birem, Elgie and many more.

I joined 2 troop,7 sqn under Capt Day in mid '65 in Osnabruck & later MT troop when it was formed , enjoyed many a night in the Belfry and Snake Pit with Stan (The Man) Fearnley and many others.

Took over as SSM's driver in'66, moved to Ripon with the Sqn and due to some of my antics got rather a quick posting to 11 sqn in Malacca,

later served in Hong Kong, Berlin, 33 Sqn, Antrim, then to Chattenden,Kent, six months of that place was enough for me, pleaded for a posting away from there, was refused so out  I came. Spent a bit of time HGV driving and have had a couple of pubs(Devon & Wales) now took early retirement.

Hope to hear from some of you......Taff
